Who hasn't stayed up till 3 am in the YouTube "vortex" just watching random videos until your eyes close? YouTube has over 490 million users worldwide that spend 2.9 billion hours on this platform per month. How did Youtube get so big in the first place and why is it so successful?
First, some background information. This site was created by three guys Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Jawed Karim in February 2005. After it started being used Google bought the site in November the following year for $1.65 billion and is the current parent company of the site. Today Youtube is worth between $26 and $46 billion
It used to be so easy to start a channel which is where all the mass appeal came from. This idea that all you needed was a camera and some basic knowledge of editing and you could be "famous". As the years went on videos needed to be perfectly edited and filmed to attract the viewers. But with new guidelines, it might be more difficult for people to start a channel. If you are interested in starting a YouTube channel check the guidelines before so you are aware of what you are signing yourself up for.
